Zachary Townsend is the inaugural Chief Data Officer of the State of California where he works with agencies, departments, boards, and commissions in improving data collection, data analysis, data sharing, and data transparency. He is also the former Senior Technology Policy Advisor to Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker. A Y Combinator graduate, he co-founded and built Standard Treasury, an API banking company that sold to Silicon Valley Bank. He has previously worked as a civic sector consultant to the NYPD, NYC Administration of Children’s Services, the MacArthur Foundation, and others. He has also worked on the data, risk, and product teams at Stripe and Gusto.
