Citizen engagement tool that facilitates language interpretation and/or connecting people who can interpret languages.

Challenge Details

A solution that will facilitate one to one and one to many interpretation between residents and city employees while being a cost effective, accurate solution.

Language barriers affect various departments within the city including business license, municipal courts, city clerk’s office, and development services center. Employees are unable to communicate efficiently to citizens whose native language is not English.

This would reduce costs related to hiring contractors and it would be convenient for our residents as well as business owners in Henderson who interact with city employees.

We are trying to solve the communication barrier between non-English speaking residents and city employees in a one to one and a one to many environments by utilizing interpretation software.

A solution that can be installed on city mobile and other devices that will interpret speech in real time. Written translation is out of scope. This solution should have the capability of multiple language interpretation services including Spanish, Tagalog, Mandarin and others. It would also need to incorporate a one-to-many scenario (i.e. public forum or council meetings). Other platforms such as Google Translate and iTranslate do not guarantee accuracy due to interpretation roadblocks.
