Real-time data analytics platform for traffic data from multiple data sources including various sensors

Challenge Details

The mission of Downtown San Diego Partnership’s “Clean & Safe” Team is to provide downtown San Diego with enhanced maintenance and safety services, including beautification efforts and a comprehensive homeless outreach program on behalf of downtown property owners. Clean & Safe’s service area covers 275 blocks of Downtown and includes the following neighborhoods: City Center, Columbia District, Cortez Hill, East Village, Gaslamp Quarter, and Marina. The cleaning and maintenance of sidewalks and streets is very labor intensive. Currently there are no adequate tools available to reduce service requests and optimize/prioritize the cleanup schedules.

San Diego is installing 3,200 smart sensors/nodes, implementing what will be the world’s largest urban IoT platform. The nodes would be connected to a digital network that will collect and use real-time anonymous sensor data that will be utilized to potentially identify sidewalk hazards and/or sidewalk areas requiring increased maintenance.

Downtown San Diego Partnership – Clean and Safe Program seek a software solution that would have the following outcomes:

• Utilize machine learning, image recognition, and other mapping to detect and identify rubbish and forward the information/data to Clean and Safe App
• Detect hazardous sidewalk issues (cracks, tripping hazards, empty tree wells and planters, and/or street vandalism (e.g. illegal dumping of hazardous materials)
• Detect water pipe breaks, clogged storm water drains and/or sewage pipes
• Reduce service requests and optimize street/sidewalk cleanup schedules
